4 week old - was due 5/1 - trying to EBF
My son was born 4 weeks early and was in the NICU for 8 days. We used the medela haberman bottle and soothie pacifiers (he had respiratory distress syndrome). He's gained weight appropriately and luckily had a wonderful LC department at the hospital where I was immediately given information about pumping with a medela symphony every 2 hours during the day and every 3 hours at night. My son still hasn't latched appropriately. The LC started him on a nipple shield and a plan. The plan was to BF with nipple shield on each side for 20 mins then supplement with breast milk 22-30 ml. This worked for a few days, but now it's not enough... either his needs have increased or he is getting less from me. Today I breastfed him with nipple shield for 30 mins each side from 3-4pm. Then at 4pm he wanted more. I did 15 mins each side (I know none of this was the "plan") ... I ended up having to give him 90 mL breastmilk at 5pm. But when I pumped the normal every 3 hours around the clock, I did notice less so he got some...
I was given 3 rounds of Ampicillin IV in the hospital during labor -- came home with a yeast infection both vaginally and nipples. Fought that with gentian violet, a couple of doses of diflucan, probiotics, etc... etc... Saturday had mastitis set in the right breast. Started another round of antibiotics for that...
Although most say to give up at this point on trying to get him to latch and be successful... I cannot give up...
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I want to know that there is hope that he will latch successfully. Some days are harder than others (today was one of those days)... So glad to have found this site...
Also, is there a scale that shows how much I should be getting per day? I worry about low supply, etc...
I hope to one day EBF....
