Happy birthday to you!  Happy birthday to you!  Happy birthday, dear Lucas!  Happy birthday to you!

I'm so thrilled to celebrate this day with my little man and list all the things he can do.  Lucas can:
  • Wave to people.  Who knows if he knows the difference between Hi and Bye, but he loves to wave.  It's usually when the person isn't looking so I think it's more of a "Hey you..." wave.
  • Pulls up and stands unassistant.  Apparently this means that walking is anytime now.  I'm not in a rush to watch Lucas teeter about wabbling, etc... but he's growing up!
  • Says a multitude of consonants including:  Mama, Dada, Nana, Gaga, Nono, Doo, Goo, Go, Doe, Moe, Ss, St, Ts (weird I know), and so forth.  He babbles a lot.
  • He's still not a big eater.  We're working on that.
  • Cruises all over the place with his various toys.  His aunt bought him a really cool dump truck that makes all the truck sounds like backing up, the horn, starting the truck, etc...  It's really neat, and he can store his toys in the back.  He got an elmo, a Corduroy bear, etc...  What a lucky little guy...
  • He points to things he wants.
  • He tends to have a little bit of a temper.  I'm wondering if this is from me?  LOL
Anyway, here's some pictures from his big day.

11 months old!

Time flies when you are having fun, no doubt about it. Lucas turned 11 months old today. He has six teeth already, cruises around and crawls everywhere. He loves his exersaucer, you know the one that many books tout as very dangerous and babies have "died" in them! Yeah, they sure have... something about a rolling object and stairs just doesn't go together. You'd think sometimes that people would have common sense, but unfortunately they don't. Case in point, look at how everyone is trying to blame someone for the economic crisis. My number one group to blame is the American consumer. Ugh, don't get me started. It's like if I went to the bank and they approved me for a million dollar loan for a home. Some people like the idea of government helping those with no common sense. I used to think that government didn't need to be so big... but geeze... maybe I assume people are smarter than they actually are.

Anyway, I digress. Lucas is a joy. Some of the things he does is make noises like a sqwack when he's happy. He smiles a lot, but he's not a big eater. You almost have to feed him little things all the time. He's just not interested in food. That in itself is NOTHING like his mother. I loved, love, and will love food as long as there is breath in my body. Thus the reason I am on weight watchers. LOL

Lucas loves bathtime. He's not fond of naps. He doesn't care for the bottle or sippy cup. I'm sort of sketchy on how to wean this little man. LOL It's a problem I didn't think I'd have back almost a year ago! Funny how one problem can morph into another.

Lucas loves to terrorize the dogs. Pate, who is extremely arthritic and on his last leg, is his favorite. It's sad on one end and funny on another. Theo, at the ripe old age of 17, seems to tolerate the abuse better than the rest. Pate has been snappy, so I have to watch them closer. Jake runs off. At 5 lbs, Jake is swift and slick at avoiding baby man.

I'd say Lucas weighs about 20 lbs maybe. He's in the bottom of the curve on weight and probably close to middle bottom in height. They never adjust for the 36 week delivery, so I always think in my mind that he's alright if he'd been born May 1st. I do hope he eats better in the future.

He's also stood without assistance. I'm the mother that doesn't want him to learn things so fast as opposed to mothers that show off what theirs can do. If I could go back and relive the past year, I would in a heartbeat. I would do it a bit different though.

I would try to enjoy it even more than I did. That's what #2 is for, right?

10 months

I am perpetually in awe in how fast time is flying in regards to the changes and development of our son, Lucas.  I never realized how fast it would go by.  He's already a miniature little boy and no longer so baby looking.  He is pulling up on anything, is fearless, and looks a lot like his daddy.  He loves to make me laugh.  He will actually blow on my stomach just as I do him and expect me to squeal with delight as he does.  It's amazing, really to see a little baby develop into something so much more and again the appreciation to my own parents grows by the moment.  We took him outside this past weekend and enjoyed the weather.  Lucas wasn't too keen on the dry, brittle grass, but it was a hoot to again practice my photography.  What a hobby.  And expensive.  Hold me back from the Nikon D700 please.  I really really want one.  Google the cost and you'll see why I don't have one right now.

month 7

Dear Lukie,

You are such a sweet little boy with bright blue eyes and a tooth barely popping out as of 11/11/08. You are more aware of your surroundings, constantly move your chubby little hands, and seemingly never want to nap during the day as to not miss a thing. You know what kisses are and lean in when I pucker my lips. What a sweet joy!

You can crawl backwards, though very slowly. You can roll and tumble as a log to go where you need to go. You love bananas and pears and have a complete disdain for most vegetables. You love to nurse still which is still the most ironic thing for me!

If I am working upstairs and someone babysitting you, and I come downstairs, you immediately find me and start fussing. You absolutely love your mommy and daddy.

I can take you anywhere right now. You are easy to deal with. You only cry when hungry or tired though I believe teething may change that I'm noticing.

You started sleeping through the night again 4 nights ago. I've been in heaven recharging my batteries. It's very tough in the beginning with a baby and one day when you are a Daddy you will find out! Parents really do go through a lot for their little ones.

You still haven't met your Uncle Billy and several distant relatives on your Papa's side. Maybe Uncle Billy will come around, but he's missed out on you by his own choice. It makes me sad because he would have loved you right now had he not held such big grudges against family for no reason. One thing I've learned is never hold a grudge against family. Yes, they will do things that a friend wouldn't do. But, they are family. I hope that you will have a forgiving heart and peacemaker soul like your father. Your daddy could work through any conflict with his soft heart.

I am so glad you are in my life. Just as they say, I cannot imagine life before you. I hope that you grow up to become a wonderful man just like your daddy and a lot of your Papa, too. We can't wait to get you on the golf course so that I can brush up on my golf game. It's been a year this month since I held a golf club!

Your cheeks are chubby. So many times I will put your little chunky foot in my mouth and pretend to gnaw on it. You will squeal with delight. What a joy!

Just yesterday you refused to sleep in your crib during the morning nap. You fell asleep on me. I sure love you cuddle bug!

month 5

You are growing right before my eyes.  I see your personality shining through.  It is so obvious that enjoy making me laugh.  You are so innocent and so special to me.  I have never felt a love like this in my entire life.  It's so special to think that your daddy and me made you... a part of him and a part of me.  I can see me in your smile and in your upper lip.  I can see your daddy in your eyes and your lower lip.  You are such a joy to us every single day.  I feel so blessed that God chose you for the two of us.  You are growing so fast!  You are still just standing in your jumper.  You have that neat little Rainforest brand and you don't really know what to do.  You love music.  I still have to swaddle you and shhhh you to sleep.  Most of the time during that time, I say little prayers over you... that you will grow up to be a Godly and good man.  I pray that you will bring joy to our lives over the next many years.  I pray that you continue to be a joy to your grandparents.  They love you so much!
You are doing better as far as sleeping during the day; however, nighttimes are a different story.  You still wake up every 3-4 hours.  Your mommy has to be creative in sleep as well trying to sleep when you do most of the time.

Many times you wake up at 6am cooing and ahhing.  It's really sweet.

What a joy you are to us!

month 4

What a wonderful experience this has been so far! This month's milestone for us is the lack of using the breastpump as before. You are finally getting it! What a joy to know that I pumped for 16 weeks and that you finally got it. It is SO much easier to just nurse and not have to pump and clean parts, make bottles, etc... In fact, it's strange this week not having to wash bottles. Wow!

I'm really getting used to life with you and wonder how was life before you? Your smile, the laughter in your eyes, and the little expressions you are already making. I cannot believe how blessed we are to have you in our lives.

We're struggling with daytime naps. You are such a fighter and don't want to miss anything! I'm hoping that now that you are older that we can try some sort of schedule, though I doubt it'll happen since your mommy is an ENFP. In other words, she doesn't have organization and planning in her genetic makeup!

We love you and feel so lucky to have you in our lives. We hope the very best for you. Everytime I put you down for a nap I pause and say some prayers for you. I really want the best for you in this world.

I just survived my first day working upstairs with a nanny downstairs. She is only here once per week as the other 2 days I work during the week is my husband’s and mother’s responsibility. It wasn’t so bad! He’s been refusing bottles for two days, but today he DID take one bottle from her. I have to make sure he does that or I will be tied down and possibly complaining for a whole new reason. I don’t want to do that.

She is a great nanny. She was young and seemed to have a lot more energy than me. I can say that meeting her and seeing her hold my little one made me realize how much more twenty somethings were made to have children. It’s hard as a thirty something sometimes. I can’t explain it, but I’m tired a lot and all the running I did earlier in life has my back hurting at times. I wish I could hire her for months… But, she’s through a staffing agency and as soon as she finds the full-time position she is looking for, I’ll be a second thought (I’m only one day a week).

Yesterday was Lucas’ 4 month appointment. He weighed 14 lbs 12 oz (25-50%) and length was _________ (will fill this in later) (25-50%). His head circumference was also 25-50%. He’s grown!

month 3

Dear L:

Mommy loves you so much! I cannot believe how big you are getting. You are smiling more at everyone. It's amazing how you have changed from that tiny infant into a bigger baby.

There’s a noise during most nights. I’m probably in some random “just started” dreaming mode where deep sleep is finally reached and my brain is starting to what I call unload everything from the day. There’s the “dolphin sound” as I call it. A pause. Another grunt. Maybe even a slip of baby gas that resembles a 40 year old man’s fart. My own internal groan as it’s going to be me that hears all this. Your daddy is still sleeping soundly. After a few of these, never a true crying out loud thing as I mostly subscribe to attachment parenting, which by the way doesn’t mean you are spoiled, but that you is attached to my own senses… my own keen understanding of what every single cry means… Well it’s obvious to me that I’m there.

I wanted to build for you a very safe first three months near me where you would feel safe and secure with no feelings of overwhelmingness in a strange place with no sounds of me nearby. I wanted you to not be jerked from the womb a month early and then somehow have to come to grips with the world around you alone. No other mammal that I know of does that. The kangaroo has their pouch - maybe the first mothers wearing their baby with their own made pouches. The monkeys on their backs. The canine searching around for the safest place where she and pups are snug together. Only humans probably have an upbringing as diverse as cosleeping all the way up to things not mentioned (illegal baby in dumpsters, etc….).

I only say all this because you are almost 3 months old. I’m going to continue to go like this until August when I pick up a couple more days of work, and I DREAD it! It’s a rite of passage of sorts, and it didn’t help when a good older friend of mine pointed out while speaking with a mother from Africa wanted to know, “Why do Americans put their babies in cages?” Ouch. Cages indeed. We pay top dollar at times for a cherry finish to the cage with slats and a private room wired to a monitor so that we can train them early on to be alone. I never thought about it from that point-of-view as I am so American. We are what we learn. Now I’m not saying I believe that, but it’s an interesting thought. It’s the same lady that told me that they had outlawed the introduction of strollers in that country due to strollers being “anti-family.” The mother was supposed to “hold” the baby. The baby does indeed love the snuggly warmth from the mother or father, and what in the world is more important in those first months that HAS to be done rather than sitting, enjoying, and savoring those first months he/she has in the world? L, you certainly love to be held and almost have an internal alarm when a warm body isn't holding you.

Sometimes it’s healthy to think in a different way rather than what we are used to.
Anyway, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, these little ones grow too fast. It won’t be long and these 2am or 3am middle of the night whines and cries will be replaced with long sleeps and naps. Those will be replaced by grade school homework woes and issues with other classmates. And the cycle moves on… I will forever be grateful of the lack of schedule I have and the lack of knowing when the next 7 hour stretch of sleep will come. It will be awhile solely due to the pumping, and even THAT (somehow) will be missed.

Lucas, it's all the first lessons of sacrifice. Oh what my own parents went through that I never appreciated! And now they are here too enjoying your first year on the earth and watching me relive what they did. The circle of life continues.

I will miss being able to hold you in the middle of the night on my chest propped up with 5 pillows in the bed with hubby sleeping next to me. Your little snores and sleepy eyes looking at me so trustfully. And me knowing you are feeling so secure and innocent in this world. You are not having to put yourself to sleep. You go to sleep naturally. I will miss those first weeks when I slept on the couch that way when you woke up every 2-3 hours on my chest. My back would ache, but there you were, the little angel right there - as I still say - snug as a bug in a rug.

There’ll come a time when I hold you that you will want to get down and explore. I will miss being able to just hold hold hold you and love you that way

So here I am up at 2:30 am, the first time this early in a few weeks, and I smile. I smile because it reminds me of how early it used to be - every three hours almost on the nose by your own internal clock - and how it wore me down… and how I’ve already come so far with you with so many stumbling blocks along the way… things that full term mommies don’t have to necessarily deal with… and I’ve fallen more in love with you, my little guy, that I was so lucky and blessed to mother.

I hope I can embrace every single moment as I am now. I don’t want to constantly grieve the loss of every stage - I want to fully enjoy them, put them to rest in a place saved for a sibling in the very near future - and eagerly anticipate the next one… hopefully it’ll send me into a greater place of joy than the previous.

I’m feeling super joyful this wee hour of the morning. I have to get back to bed and peek at you just one more time. Just know that in about 3 hours, he’ll be back on my chest as I’ll grab you from your nearby bassinett snoozing probably until noon!

Carpe diem…

two month letter

It’s nice to be here today… 7 weeks with more progress on breastfeeding. I just pumped out less than an ounce on the right breast when I usually get about 2-3 oz… You are definitely making progress. I went to Target today and forgot my diaper bag and actually had to nurse you to get you to stop crying hiding in the back of the SUV. For one brief moment, I felt like a regular breastfeeding mom. For a second. Yesterday I pumped 30 oz. That’s pretty huge at this point, especially considering I nursed you a lot too - I should say I tried. If I’m not careful, the garage freezer will become a breastmilk storage! I read a funny article about breastmilk for sale… I suppose if the economy continues to tank, I could always sell breastmilk! LOL

Hubby is going out of town for 6 nights straight starting this Friday, and I’m really dreading it. My mother is going to stay with me a lot this weekend, but I know it wears her out during the week to come over here at night. A friend of mine is coming over one of those nights, just after work until mid evening or so… but every little bit helps. It’s the sleep I need more than anything. Like now. I’m sitting here typing when I should be sleeping. You’d think they’d come up with a pill that would make you feel refreshed like you have slept a full night. I’d buy a ton of it….

You are a joy. You are growing right before our eyes. Your coloring has changed to normal, you smile a little bit while awake instead of just while sleeping. You still require a bottle, but I keep on trying. I'd like to make it to 6 months. The first lesson in sacrifice.

Your Nana and Papa really love you, too. They moved here just for you in December and really enjoy spending lots of time with you. You've really made our family better!

I’m not really good at making and adhering to schedules. In fact I’m more of a “fly by the seat of my pants” kind of girl. It’s tough for me to set an alarm clock for every 3 hours to pump. It’s not as hard now you because I am letting the schedule go that was given to me by a lactation consultant… I’m listening for you to tell me when you are hungry, etc… However, due to the lack of consistent breastfeeding, I have to pump or lose my supply. The clock is ticking… 3-4 more weeks of this before I make the big decision - exclusively pump or formula? Who would have thought breastfeeding would be so hard? Today it feels like I have knives inside my breasts. Not too much fun.

You are doing alright. Lately, you've had a belly ache (I think?) and have fooled me into thinking your hungry only to eat more and spit up. I think it could be the di.flucan I’m taking for the nipple thrush? I do know it can get in milk and cause gastrointestinal upset. You also have an umbilical hernia. It's rather severe right now but apparently resolves on its own.

Tomorrow, we’re going back to the hospital where you were born to meet with the lactation consultants there. I think I’m done with the one I’ve been using. I called her yesterday and she’s yet to call me back AND recommended Avent bottles containing BPA that I bought. The one at the hospital told me to throw them out and go back to the haberman.

one month letter

It is April 8th, and I cannot stand the emotional rollercoaster that I am on. I cannot stand that I don’t have you in the hospital room wih me but instead in the NICU. The sounds of babies in the hallway, the flurry of activity around the nursery down the hall, and the people visiting makes me sad. I'm sure my hormones are in full force right now. My “baby” for now is a laptop computer already filled with over 50 photos of you. You are on the 7th floor with a lot of other sicker babies. You look like the biggest one in the room! You have a cute little clear bassinett with a handmade Lucas sign over your bed. You have a cpap over your face with soapy bubbles around (surfactant). I don't know why you decided to appear a month early, but here you are!

There's a little baby across from you named Daxton who arrived at 20-something weeks. We are really blessed that you are healthy though just need a little help the first week or two.

I found out your oxygen saturation (O2 sats) were about 88% when taken to the NICU right after birth. They utilized your umbilical area for an umbilical arterial catheter for IV access. It’s more comfortable for the baby (no pain to stick with a needle) but it also rules out the ability for me to hold your for several days. I don’t know which is worse, being stuck peripherally for a baby or him not being held. The jury is still out… for me… it hurts.

I want you well. I need to know how long you'll be in the hospital.

You are four weeks old! It has been quite an adjusment for mommy and daddy. I get very little sleep, but it's nice being off work. I am pretty adament about nursing so that you get the "best" being that you were in the NICU and had trouble in the beginning of life. We brought you home on April 15th, tax day! Welcome home our little tax deduction!

You are so little and so cute. Your coloring is beautiful though a little yellow as you are jaundiced. You are getting no formula at this point. Mommy pumps 8-10 times a day. I wonder if you hear that pumping sound and recognize it by now?

You make a lot of neat noises. It’s funny when you have a blow out. You are a sleepy eater and always fall asleep. I have to make you eat right now. Part of me thinks maybe I shouldn’t force you, but we do so far until the pediatrician tells us otherwise.

The night we roomed in at the hospital was funny because the nurse woke us up at 6:30am and asked me in her chinese accent if I’d you. Um, no… there’s no alarm clock in here and are you kidding that I’m going to be able to wake up on my own considering I’ve been sleep deprived now for over a week??? Laugh. So we fed you after our little lecture from the nurse. Here we are … a 35 year old and a 40 year old being told how to feed a baby. Her words, "You need to feed your baby. He a big eater!"

I never knew love until you.
